A devastating house fire in Bellmore claimed the life of one resident and left three others hospitalized for smoke inhalation early Wednesday morning, casting a shadow over the Christmas holiday for the Nassau County community.

The blaze erupted around 4:30 a.m. at a home on Chapman Avenue, quickly spreading to engulf a second residence and damage a third property before firefighters could bring it under control.

Bellmore Fire Department Chief Ozechowski reported that crews encountered heavy fire conditions upon arrival, with flames so intense that initial rescue attempts were forced back. The situation grew more challenging when firefighters discovered a nearby hydrant buried under ice and snow, causing critical delays in establishing water supply during the early stages of the response.

“Sadly one occupant is deceased at the scene, despite valiant efforts to rescue the trapped occupant by fire department and police officers,” Nassau County Chief Fire Marshal Michael F. Uttaro said in an official statement.

Two Nassau County police officers sustained smoke inhalation injuries while attempting to enter the burning structure to reach the trapped resident. Both officers received medical treatment at local hospitals. A third victim, identified as a resident from the second affected home, was also treated for smoke inhalation.

The fire’s rapid spread caused structural collapse in both primary residences, leaving them uninhabitable. Residents of the second home managed to evacuate safely before the flames reached their property, though their dwelling ultimately succumbed to the blaze.

The incident highlights ongoing winter fire safety challenges across Long Island, where ice and snow can complicate emergency response efforts. Fire departments throughout Nassau and Suffolk counties have previously emphasized the importance of keeping fire hydrants clear during winter months, as access delays can prove fatal in rapidly developing situations.

Bellmore, a hamlet within the Town of Hempstead, is home to approximately 16,000 residents. The Chapman Avenue area consists primarily of single-family homes built in close proximity, a common layout throughout Nassau County’s suburban neighborhoods that can allow fires to spread quickly between structures.

The Nassau County Fire Marshal’s office has launched a full investigation into the cause of the deadly blaze. Officials have not yet released the identity of the deceased victim, pending notification of family members.

Local fire departments responded with mutual aid from surrounding communities, a standard practice for significant structural fires in Nassau County. The response included units from multiple departments working to prevent further spread to neighboring homes.

This tragedy marks one of the deadliest residential fires in Nassau County this year, serving as a stark reminder of fire safety importance during the holiday season when heating systems work overtime and decorative lighting increases electrical loads.

The American Red Cross has been contacted to assist displaced residents with temporary housing and emergency needs. Community members have begun organizing support for affected families through local religious organizations and civic groups.

Fire officials urge all Long Island residents to check smoke detector batteries, ensure heating equipment receives proper maintenance, and keep space heaters away from combustible materials as winter temperatures continue.
