The blaze erupted around 4:30 a.m. at a residence on Chapman Avenue, quickly spreading to neighboring properties in the Nassau County community. Bellmore Fire Department Chief Ozechowski reported that crews encountered heavy fire conditions immediately upon arrival, with flames so intense that initial rescue attempts had to be abandoned.

“Sadly one occupant is deceased at the scene, despite valiant efforts to rescue the trapped occupant by fire department and police officers,” Chief Fire Marshal Michael F. Uttaro said in an official statement.

The fire’s rapid spread proved catastrophic for the Chapman Avenue neighborhood. After consuming the original home, flames jumped to a second residence, though those occupants managed to evacuate safely on their own. The structural integrity of both homes was compromised, leading to collapse in each building. A third nearby home sustained damage from the blaze.

Winter weather conditions complicated the emergency response, a familiar challenge for Long Island fire departments during the colder months. Firefighters had to dig out a fire hydrant that was buried under ice and snow, creating what officials described as a “slight delay” in their initial attack on the flames.

Three people required medical treatment for smoke inhalation injuries sustained during the incident. One resident was transported to a local hospital for treatment, while two Nassau County Police officers who attempted to enter the burning structure to assist with rescue efforts also received medical attention for smoke inhalation.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Nassau County Fire Marshal’s office. No additional details about the circumstances leading to the blaze have been released.

Bellmore, located in the Town of Hempstead, is home to approximately 16,000 residents. The community sits in the heart of Nassau County’s suburban landscape, with many homes built in close proximity to one another, which can contribute to fire spread when conditions are severe.

This tragedy underscores the importance of winter fire safety preparations for Long Island homeowners. Fire officials routinely remind residents to ensure smoke detectors have fresh batteries, heating systems are properly maintained, and escape routes remain clear of snow and ice during the winter months.

The incident also demonstrates the dedication of local first responders who risk their own safety to protect residents. Both police officers who suffered smoke inhalation were attempting rescue operations when they were overcome by the dangerous conditions.

As the investigation continues, the Bellmore community mourns the loss of life while supporting those affected by this devastating fire. The incident serves as a stark reminder of how quickly fires can spread and the critical importance of early detection and rapid response during emergency situations.

Local fire departments encourage residents to review their family emergency plans and ensure all household members know multiple exit routes from their homes.
