The fire broke out around 4:30 a.m. at a home on Chapman Avenue, quickly spreading to a neighboring residence and causing structural damage to a third property. Bellmore Fire Department Chief Ozechowski reported that crews arrived to find heavy fire conditions that had already begun to consume the initial structure.

Firefighters faced significant challenges during their response, including a fire hydrant that had been covered by ice and snow from recent winter weather. Crews had to dig out the hydrant, causing what officials described as a “slight delay” in their suppression efforts.

Despite the obstacles, firefighters and police officers made multiple attempts to enter the burning home to rescue trapped occupants. However, the intense flames forced them back repeatedly.

“Sadly one occupant is deceased at the scene, despite valiant efforts to rescue the trapped occupant by fire department and police officers,” Chief Fire Marshal Michael F. Uttaro said in an official statement.

The fire’s rapid spread forced residents of the second home to evacuate on their own, though they managed to escape safely. Both the original structure and the neighboring home suffered complete structural collapse due to the intensity of the flames.

Two Nassau County police officers who participated in rescue attempts were treated for smoke inhalation at local hospitals. A resident from one of the affected homes also received medical treatment for smoke inhalation injuries.

The incident highlights ongoing concerns about winter fire safety on Long Island, where freezing temperatures can complicate emergency response efforts. Ice-covered hydrants and equipment challenges are common issues that local fire departments face during the winter months.

Bellmore, located in Nassau County’s Town of Hempstead, is a densely populated suburban community where homes are often built close together. This proximity can allow fires to spread rapidly between structures, as occurred in Wednesday’s incident.

The Nassau County Fire Marshal’s office has launched a full investigation into the cause of the blaze. Officials have not yet determined what sparked the initial fire, and the investigation remains ongoing.

Local fire officials are using this incident to remind residents about winter fire safety precautions, including keeping heating systems properly maintained and ensuring smoke detectors have fresh batteries. They also emphasize the importance of having clear evacuation plans, particularly during winter months when weather conditions can complicate emergency responses.

The Bellmore Fire Department responded alongside mutual aid companies from surrounding Nassau County communities, a standard practice for major structure fires in the area. The coordinated response involved multiple engine companies and rescue units working to contain the blaze and prevent further spread to nearby homes.

This tragic incident marks one of the most serious residential fires in the Bellmore area in recent months, serving as a stark reminder of how quickly fire can spread and the heroic efforts of first responders who risk their lives to save others.
